Time for an Update!

I'm back! Admittedly, I fell off the blogging bandwagon for awhile. However, I'm ready to get back on and keep sharing my learning process. Since I last posted, I've finished both the MongoDB course and the Git a Web Dev Job course. The Mongo course was a bit rough for the final - I felt like there should have been more actual writing in Node, as it was a Mongo for Node developers course. There was a lot of guessing and trial and error involved with getting the final into working order. I passed it though! And it was definitely some good introduction into working with MongoDB. I have another course I'm signed up for that I'll get into a bit down the road, which will hopefully gain me some more understanding of how to use it. The Web Dev course was very good! I really gained a lot from walking through the entire process of setting up a web page, at least design wise. I've been able to go back to it and try to apply some of the features we made to my own p...

Mongo 101JS - Week 5

Hi everyone! I've been home on stay-cation this week - really just a break from going to the day job. I intended to do a lot of things this week, but naturally most of those haven't happened. What has happened is I've gained a lot of 100% complete trophies on my PS3! lol It's been a good break overall, just always too short! I did manage to stay on course with my mongodb class this week though! Our focus this week was on indexes. A lot of the information has felt like it was over my head - a lot of background information on how the database actually works. I feel like I've got vague understanding of things, but really what I'm wanting is more information on how to interact with it in programs. Which I've gotten some information on, just...not as much as I'd like. I lost a good hour or so to the last homework problem this week. We were meant to import a sysprofile json document and query it for a specific query. Taking into account the type of file ...

Git Web Dev Course - End of Section 8

Tonight was all about finishing the styling on our intro / story section of this travel agency site we're building in the course. I really like the way this course is going about showing us things. I love that it gets into the whys of the workflow instead of just saying "this is how you do it, just use these commands"....it really tries to explain what's going on which each command and shows you what it looks like to do it yourself. I also really love that we actually style the site ourselves. Other courses I've done, all of the styling is done for you, and the focus is more on adding interaction and JavaScript alone. It's been really nice actually walking through building a site from a design file, step by step. Actually going through and styling it all. All we're given to begin with is the basic HTML file, so there's no typing of paragraphs and such. We still add in classes, and other divs, and links to photos and such. It's a good mix. Wit...

Portfolio Thoughts

My redesign of my portfolio is pretty close to done. This will be my third iteration of it. lol It's pretty similar to my second iteration, mostly tweaking some layout things. Just a few things left to do.... I have a certificate section, which I'd like the cert to show a larger view if someone clicks on it. Pretty sure I can get this working somewhat easily, just gotta write it in. Need to re-write my about text, again. I can't get it to sound quite like I want.  I'd like to keep working on my navigation, add a colored highlight under the current section. Not real sure how to do this yet, so this one might wait awhile. I've got a little arrow on my title page, just to, you know, show that it scrolls down. Sort of feel like it should be a button but also I don't want it to be one. Think I'll wait on this until I share my page and get some feedback, see if it's mentioned at all. Eventually want to add my resume on there. I've got the button hi...

Building the Life I Want - A Starting Point

Hello there! I'm glad you're here. This blog is going to be a record of my learning process. At least once a week (sometimes more), I intend to share what I'm learning, what I'm struggling with, and make this a place to store learning and progress. Feel free to follow along and share your thoughts with me! So, here's where I'm starting from - working through two different courses: MongoDB for JavaScript Developers  - I've been wanting to focus on a database language for quite some time now, and after completing a course that utilized MongoDB, I decided to take the plunge and do a deep dive into it. Luckily, I was just in time to start the current round! I'm currently in between weeks 3 & 4, and have already learned so much. So far, we've covered getting the mongod server started on our computers, interacting with it through the mongo shell commands, and are just getting started with working with the database in node itself. Git a Web Deve...
